Die Business Process Reengineering Methode (BPR) wird durch Hammer und Champy als „die grundlegende nochmalige Betrachtung und die radikale Umgestaltun der organisatorischen Prozesse beschrieben, um drastische Verbesserung der gegenwärtigen Leistung in Kosten, Dienstleistungen und Geschwindigkeit zu erzielen“.

Anstatt ein Unternehmen in funktionelle Spezialgebiete zu organisieren (wie Produktion, Buchhaltung, Marketing, etc.) und die Aufgaben zu betrachten, die jede Funktion durchführt, empfehlen Hammer und Champy, dass wir komplette Prozesse betrachten sollten. Von der Materialakquisition in Richtung Produktion, in Richtung Marketing und Distribution. Man sollte das Unternehmen in eine Reihe von Prozessen umbauen.

Michael Hammer und James Champy

Die Hauptbefürworter von Re-engineering waren Michael Hammer und James Champy. Eine geringere Anzahl von Unternehmen verwendet den "exhaustive" Ansatz, der versucht, alle Prozesse innerhalb einer Organisation zu identifizieren und diese in der Reihenfolge der Umgestaltungsdringlichkeit zu priorisieren.
3. Verstehen und bewerten Sie die vorhandenen Prozesse: das Wiederholen von alten Fehlern vermeiden und eine Grundlinie für zukünftige Verbesserungen zur Verfügung stellen. Vergleichen Sie: Wissenschaftliche Betriebsführung
4. Identifizieren Sie IT Hebel: Bewußtsein von IT Fähigkeiten kann und sollte BPR beeinflussen.
5. Entwerfen und errichten Sie einen Prototyp des neuen Prozesses: das tatsächliche Design sollte nicht als das Ende des BPR Prozesses angesehen werden. Es sollte eher als Prototyp mit aufeinanderfolgenden Wiederholungen angesehen werden. Die Metapher des Prototyps richtet den Business Process Reengineering-Ansatz an die schnelle Lieferung von Resultaten und die Miteinbeziehung und Zufriedenheit der Kunden aus.

Als ein zusätzlicher 6. Schritt der BPR-Methode finden Sie manchmal: die Organisationsstruktur und das Steuerungs-Modell in Richtung zum eben entworfenen Primärprozess anpassen.

Generische Umstände, die beeinflussen, ob BPR ratsam ist

Obgleich es schwierig ist generischen Rat über dieses zu geben, sind einige Faktoren, die betrachtet werden können:

• Übertrifft die Konkurrenz deutlich die Leistung der Firma? Vergleichen Sie: Turnaround-Management
• Gibt es viele Konflikte in der Organisation?
• Gibt es eine extrem hohe Frequenz von Konferenzen?
• Übermäßiger Gebrauch von unstrukturierter Kommunikation? (Protokolle, E-Mail, usw.)
• Ist es möglich einen kontinuierlicheren Ansatz der stufenweisen, zusätzlichen Verbesserungen zu berücksichtigen? (sehen Sie: Kaizen-Konzept).

Kritiken des BPR Ansatzes

Innerbetrieblicher Strukturwandel hat einen schlechten Ruf erworben, weil solche Projekte häufig massive Entlassungen zur Folge hatten. Trotz des Hypes der die Einführung des Business Process Reengineerings umgab, teilweise aufgrund der Tatsache, dass die Autoren von Reengineering the Corporation angeblich sehr große Mengen ihres Buches gekauft haben, um die Spitze der Bestsellerlisten zu erreichen, hat die Methode nicht alle Erwartungen erfüllt. Die Hauptgründe scheinen zu sein, dass:

• BPR nimmt an, dass der Faktor, der die Leistung der Organisation begrenzt, die Wirkungslosigkeit ihrer Prozesse ist. Dieses kann oder kann möglicherweise nicht immer zutreffend sein. Auch BPR bietet keine Mittel an, diese Annahme zu validieren.
• BPR nimmt das Bedürfnis an, den Prozeß der Leistungverbesserung mit einer „weißen Weste“ zu beginnen, d.h. missachtet komplett den Status Quo.
• BPR bietet nicht die Möglichkeit, die Verbesserungsbemühungen auf die Engpässe der Organisation zu richten. (Wie es in der Theory of Constraints von Goldratt getan wird).
• Manchmal, oder möglicherweise ziemlich häufig, kann eine stufenweise und zusätzliche Änderung (wie Kaizen-Konzept) ein besserer Ansatz sein.
• BPR ist kulturell in Richtung der US-Denkweise voreingenommen. (sehen Sie: Kulturdimensionen)

BPR verglichen mit Kaizen

Wenn Kaizen mit der BPR-Methode verglichen wird, ist es eindeutig, dass die Kaizen-Philosophie menschenorientierter und einfacher einzuführen ist, aber langfristige Disziplin erfordert und nur eine geringe Geschwindigkeit der Änderung mit sich bringt. Der Business Process Reengineering-Ansatz ist andererseits schwieriger, technologieorientierter, er ermöglicht radikale Änderung, aber erfordert beträchtliche Änderungs-Managementfähigkeiten.
