Wat is Kaizen? Definitie

De Kaizen methode van ononderbroken incrementele verbeteringen is een oorspronkelijk Japans managementconcept voor geleidelijke, ononderbroken (incrementele) verandering (verbetering).

Kaizen is eigenlijk een manier van leven en filosofie. Het veronderstelt dat elk aspect van ons leven het constant verdient om verbeterd te worden. De Kaizen Filosofie ligt achter vele Japanse managementconcepten zoals: Totale Kwaliteitsbeheersing, De cirkels van de Kwaliteitsbeheersing, kleine groepsactiviteiten, werkverhoudingen.

Zeer belangrijke elementen van Kaizen zijn: kwaliteit, inspanning, betrokkenheid van alle werknemers, bereidheid te veranderen, en communicatie.

Japanse bedrijven maken onderscheid tussen: Innovatie, een radicale vorm van verandering, en Kaizen, een continue vorm van verandering. Kaizen betekent letterlijk: verandering (kai) om goed te worden (zen).

De vijf fundamentele elementen van Kaizen

1. Teamwork.
2. Persoonlijke discipline.
3. Beter moreel.
4. Kwaliteitscirkels.
5. Suggesties voor verbetering.

Uit dit fundament, doen zich drie zeer belangrijke factoren in Kaizen voor

• Verwijdering van afval (muda) en ondoelmatigheid.
• Het Kaizen raamwerk van vijf S-en voor goed schoonmaken.
•       1. Seiri - scheiden, opruimen
•       2. Seiton - schikken, ordenen
•       3. Seiso - schoonmaken, reinigen
•       4. Seiketsu - standaardiseren (van 1-3)
•       5. Shitsuke - systematiseren (van 1-4)
• Standaardisatie.

Wanneer zou de Kaizen Filosofie moeten worden toegepast? Hoewel het moeilijk is om generiek advies te geven is het duidelijk dat het goed past in geleidelijke, oplopende veranderingssituaties die verandering op lange termijn vereisen, en in collectieve culturen. De meer individuele culturen die meer worden geconcentreerd op succes op korte termijn zijn vaak bevorderlijker voor concepten zoals Herontwerpen van Bedrijfsprocessen.

Kaizen in vergelijking met Business Process Reengineering

Wanneer Kaizen met de BPR methode wordt vergeleken dan is het duidelijk dat de Kaizen Filosofie meer mensgericht is, gemakkelijker uit te voeren, maar discipline vereist op lange termijn en slechts een klein tempo van verandering biedt. Aan de andere kant is de Business Process Reengineering aanpak harder, technologiegeoriënteerd, maakt radicale verandering mogelijk, maar vereist aanzienlijke vaardigheden van het veranderingsmanagement.
