Korte biografie van W. Edwards Deming

W. Edwards Deming was een Amerikaans statisticus die wordt geassocieerd met de opkomst van Japan als productienatie, en met de uitvinding van Integrale Kwaliteitszorg (TQM). Deming ging vlak na de Oorlog naar Japan om te helpen een telling van de Japanse bevolking op te zetten. Terwijl hij daar was, onderwees hij „statistische procesbeheersing“ aan Japanse ingenieurs - een reeks technieken die hen toestond om goederen van uitstekende kwaliteit te vervaardigen zonder dure machines. In 1960 werd hem een medaille toegekend door de Japanse Keizer voor zijn diensten aan de industrie van dat land.

Deming keerde naar de V.S. terug en bleef daar jarenlang onbekend tot de publicatie van zijn boek „Out of the crisis“ in 1982. In dit boek, stelde Deming 14 punten op waarvan hij geloofde dat als zij toegepast werden op de productiebedrijven van de V.S., de V.S. een industrieel noodlot door de Japanners zou worden bespaard.
 

De Veertien Punten van Management van Dr. W. Edward Deming vertegenwoordigen voor vele mensen de essentie van Integrale Kwaliteitszorg (TQM).
 

De Veertien Punten van Management van Deming

1. Creëer een constant doel van verbetering van product en dienstverlening. Vergelijk: Hoshin Kanri Strategievorming. (Organisaties moeten middelen toewijzen voor planning op de lange termijn, onderzoek, en onderwijs, en voor de constante verbetering van het ontwerp van hun producten en diensten)
2. Adopteer de nieuwe filosofie. (Overheidsverordeningen die hindernissen zijn moeten worden verwijderd, transformatie van bedrijven is nodig)
3. Beëindig de afhankelijkheid van massainspecties. (Kwaliteit moet in de processen worden ontworpen en worden ingebouwd. Voorkom defecten, eerder dan te proberen om hen te ontdekken en te repareren nadat zij zijn voorgekomen)
4. Stop met het geven van opdrachten op basis van alleen de prijskaartjes. (Organisaties zouden lange termijn verhoudingen met [enige] leveranciers moeten aangaan)
5. Verbeter constant en voor altijd het systeem van productie en serviceverlening. (Het Management en de werknemers moeten onophoudelijk naar manieren zoeken om de kwaliteit en de productiviteit te verbeteren)
6. Zet trainingen op. (Opleiding op alle niveaus is een noodzaak, geen kwestie van keuze)
7. Adopteer en stel leiderschap in. (De Managers zouden moeten leiden, niet controleren)
8. Verdrijf de angst. (Maak dat werknemers zich veilig genoeg voelen om hun ideeën uit te drukken en om vragen te stellen)
9. Breek barrières tussen functionele gebieden af. (Het werken in teams zal vele problemen oplossen en zal de kwaliteit en de productiviteit verbeteren)
10. Elimineer slogans, waarschuwingen, en targets voor het personeel. (Problemen met kwaliteit en productiviteit worden veroorzaakt door het systeem, niet door individuen. Posters en slogans produceren frustratie en wrok)
11. Elimineer numerieke quotas voor het personeel en numerieke doelstellingen voor de mensen in het management. (Om hun quotas te bereiken, zullen de mensen producten met gebreken en valse rapporten creëren)
12. Ruim hindernissen uit de weg die mensen van hun trots op vakmanschap beroven. (Individuele prestatieoverzichten zijn een grote barrière voor de trots om iets bereikt te hebben)
13. Moedig educatie en zelfverbetering voor iedereen aan. (Ononderbroken leren voor iedereen)
14. Voer actie om de transformatie te bereiken. (Commitments namens zowel het topmanagement als de werknemers is vereist).
