Korte biografie van W. Edwards Deming

W. Edwards Deming was een Amerikaanse statisticus. Hij wordt geassocieerd met de opkomst van Japan als productienatie, en met de uitvinding van Integrale Kwaliteitszorg (TQM). Samen met een andere Amerikaanse kwaliteitsgoeroe - J.M. Juran, ging Deming naar Japan als onderdeel van de geallieerde bezettingsmacht na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Deming onderwees vele Kwaliteitsverbeteringmethoden aan de Japanners, met inbegrip van het gebruik van statistieken en de PDSA cyclus. In 1960 werd hem een medaille toegekend door de Japanse Keizer voor zijn diensten aan de industrie van dat land.

De Kwaliteitscirkel van Deming (PDSA cyclus)

De Kwaliteitscirkel van Deming, of de PDSA cyclus, is een model voor ononderbroken verbetering van kwaliteit. Het bestaat uit een logische opeenvolging van vier herhalende stappen voor ononderbroken verbetering en leren: PLAN, DO, STUDY {CHECK} and ACT (PLAN, DOE, BESTUDEER {CONTROLEER} en HANDEL). De PDCA cyclus staat ook bekend als de Kwaliteitscirkel van Deming, of als het Deming Wiel of als de Ononderbroken Verbeteringsspiraal. Deze werd in de jaren 20 bedacht door de eminente statistiek deskundige M. Walter A. Shewhart, die het concept Plan, Doe en Kijk (Plan, Do, See) introduceerde. Deming wijzigde de cyclus van Shewart naar: PLAN, DO, STUDY and ACT (PLAN, DOE, BESTUDEER en HANDEL).
De Deming Cycle (Kwaliteitscirkel van Deming) is verwant met Kaizen-filosofie denken en met Just-in-time productie.

De 4 onderdelen van de Kwaliteitscirkel van Deming verklaard

• PLAN. Plan vooruit voor verandering. Analyseer en voorspel de resultaten.
• DOE het. Voer het plan uit, kleine stapjes nemend onder gecontroleerde omstandigheden.
• STUDIE (controle). Bestudeer de resultaten.
• HANDELING (Eng: ACT). Neem actie om het proces te standaardiseren of te verbeteren.

The Deming Management Methode verklaard door Mary Watson

In haar boek „The Deming Management Method“ vertelt Mary Watson over het leven van de bedrijfsgoeroe Edwards Deming. Het industriële mirakel in Japan was een eerste voorbeeld van wat er kan gebeuren wanneer een natie zich commit aan een kwaliteit en lange termijn visie in plaats van de laatste ziekte: „Turning a Fast Buck-itis.“ In minder dan 50 jaar, ontwikkelde Japan zich van het maken van goedkope en lage toegevoegde waardeproducten, naar het produceren van het hoogste kwaliteitsprecisie werk in de wereld. Toen Dr. Deming voor het eerst begon te spreken in Amerika, was Amerika nog steeds in de euforie van de naoorlogse overwinningsgolf. Niemand wilde naar hem luisteren. De Japanners heetten hem welkom, en zelfs vandaag de dag, kunnen sporen van zijn kwaliteitscontrolemethoden nog steeds teruggevonden worden in de industriële werkplaats.
