W. Edwards Deming의 간단한 약력

W. Edwards Deming은 미국의 통계학자였다. 그는 제조국가로서 일본의 부흥과 전사적 품질관리(TQM)의 고안과 연관되어 있다. 데밍은 품질관리의 대가인 J.M. Juran과 함께 2차 세계대전 후 연합군 점령군의 일원으로 일본에 갔다. 데밍은 통계와 일본인들에게 PDSA 사이클의 활용을 포함하여 많은 품질개선 방법을 가르쳤다. 1960년 일본황제는 데밍에게 일본 산업에 대한 공로로 메달을 수여하였다.

데밍 사이클 (PDSA,PDCA )

데밍 사이클, 또는 PDSA 사이클은 지속적인 품질개선을 위한 모델이다. 모델은 지속적인 개선 및 학습을 위한 4가지 반복적인 단계를 논리적 순서로 연결한 것이다 : 계획,실행,확인,조치 (PLAN, DO, STUDY(CHECK), ACT). PDCA 사이클은 데밍 사이클 또는 데밍의 수레바퀴, 또는 지속적인 나선형 개선(Continuous Improvement Spira)으로 알려져 있다. 데밍 사이클은 1920년대에 계획,실행,평가(Plan, Do and See) 개념을 도입한 저명한 통계전문가 Walter A. Shewhart으로부터 유래되었다. 데밍은 Shewart의 사이클을 다음과 같이 수정하였다 : 계획, 실행, 학습, 조치 (PLAN, DO, STUDY, ACT).
Deming Cycle [데밍 사이클]는 Kaizen[카이젠, 개선기법] 사고와 Just-in-time [JIT, 적시생산시스템] 제조와 관련있다.
 

데밍 사이클의 이점

데밍 사이클의 4단계 설명

• 계획. 변화를 위한 사전 계획. 결과 분석 및 예측.
• 계획 실행. 통제된 상황에서 작은 조치를 취하며 계획을 실행.
• 학습 (확인). 결과를 연구.
• 조치. 프로세스를 표준화하거나 개선하기 위한 행동 조치.

데밍 관리 방법에 대한 Mary Watson의 설명.

"The Deming Management Method" 라는 저서에서 Mary Watson은 비즈니스의 거장 데밍의 삶에 대해 이야기 한다. 일본의 산업기적은 한 국가가 품질과 장기적인 비전에 충실할 때 다음과 같은 병폐대신에 일어날 수 있는 가장 좋은 본보기이다. "Turning a Fast Buck-itis." 50년이 안되어, 일본은 싸고 낮은 부가가치 제품 생산에서, 세계에서 가장 품질이 높은 정밀제품을 제조하는 국가로 바뀌었다. 데밍 박사가 미국에서 미국은 전후승전의 여파에 따른 혜택을 누리고 있다고 말했을 때, 어느 누구도 데밍박사에 귀를 기울이지 않았다. 일본은 데밍 박사를 환영했고, 심지오 오늘날에도 그의 품질관리방법의 흔적을 산업현장에서 볼 수 있다.
