Michael Porter의 가치사슬 모델은 기업기 가치창출과 경쟁우위를 달성할 수 있도록 하는 구체적 활동들을 분석하는데 유용한 모델이다.

가치사슬을 구성하는 활동

• 본원적 활동(라인 기능)
  • 구매물류 (Inbound Logistics). 원재료 구입, 검수, 및 보관, 재고관리, 생산현장 출하
  • 제조(Operations). 투입물을 최종제품으로 변환시키는 가공, 포장, 조립, 장비유지, 검사 등 모든 가치창출 활동.
  • 출하물류(Outbound Logistics). 최종제품을 고객에게 전달하는 데 필요한 활동: 창고관리, 주문실행, 배송, 유통 관리.
  • 마케팅과 판매(Marketing and Sales). 구매자들이 제품을 구매하도록 하는 데 관련된 활동: 채널 선정, 광고, 프로모션, 판매활동, 가격결정, 소매점 관리 등.
  • 서비스(Service). 제품가치를 유지 및 강화하는 활동: 고객 지원, 수리, 설치, 기술자 훈련, 예비부품 관리, 업그레이드 등.
• 지원 활동 (스텝기능, 일반관리)
  • 조달(Procurement). 원료, 서비스, 예비 부품, 건물, 기계 등의 조달.
  • 기술 개발(Technology Development). 가치사슬 내의 활동을 지원하는 기술개발 : 연구개발, 프로세스 자동화, 설계, 재설계.
  • 인적자원관리 (Human Resource Management). 직원 및 관리자의 보충, 자기계발(교육), 보유 및 보상.
  • 기업 인프라스트럭처(Firm Infrastructure). 일반 관리, 기획관리, 법무, 재무, 회계, PR, 품질관리 등.

가치사슬 상에서의 비용우위 창출

기업은 다음의 활동들을 통하여 비용우위를 창출할 수 있다:

• 개별 가치사슬 활동의 비용 절감, 또는
• 가치사슬의 재구성.(Reconfiguring).

비용우위는 본원적 활동 혹은 지원활동에서의 비용절감을 통하여 창출될 수 있다는 것을 유념해야 하며, 최근 많은 기업들은 정보기술을 현명하게 사용함으로써 비용우위를 달성하고 있다.

일단 가치사슬이 정의되면, 가치사슬 활동에 대한 비용배분을 통하여 비용분석을 수행할 수 있다. Porter는 가치사슬 활동과 관련한 10 가지 비용결정요인(cost drivers)을 확인했으며, 다음과 같다:

1. 규모의 경제.
2. 학습효과.
3. 설비 가동률.
4. 활동간의 유기적 연계성(조직효율성).
5. 사업단위간 연계성.
6. 수직적 통합의 정도.
7. 시장진입 시점.
8. 비용 또는 차별화에 대한 기업의 정책
9. 지리적 위치.
10. 제도적 요인(규제, 노동조합 활동, 세제 등).

기업은 이러한 결정요인들을 경쟁자들보다 더 잘 관리하고 통제함으로써 비용우위를 달성할 수 있다. 비용우위는 또한 가치사슬의 "재구성"을 통해서도 추구할 수 있다. "재구성"이란 다음과 같은 구조적 변화를 의미한다: 새로운 생산 프로세스, 새로운 유통채널, 또는 차별적인 판매 방법.

일반적으로, 기업의 가치사슬은 다른 가치사슬과 연결되어 있으며, 더 큰 가치사슬의 한 부분이기도 하다. 경쟁우위를 만들어 낸다는 것은 기업의 전체 가치사슬을 얼마나 효율적으로 분석하고 관리할 수 있는 가에 달려있다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 개념을 공급망 관리라 부르기도 한다. 일부에서는 네트워크라는 단어가 가치사슬의 물리적 형태를 묘사하는데 있어 실질적으로 보다 적절한 단어라고 주장하기도 한다 : 가치 네트워크(Value Networks).
