7S 모델이란 무엇인가?

McKinsey의 7S 모델은 전체적이고(holistic) 효과적인 방식으로 기업을 조직하는 7가지 요인을 묘사하는 경영모델이다. 이러한 요인을 갖고 기업을 운영하는 방식을 결정한다. 경영자는 이러한 7가지 요인을 모두 고려하여 어떠한 전략을 성공적으로 수행할 수 있도록 해야 한다. 대기업 또는 중소기업 모두 적용. 이 요인들은 모두 독립적이다. 따라서 그 중의 하나라도 적절한 주의를 기울이지 않으면 다른 요인에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 각각의 요인의 상대적 중요성은 때에 따라 변할 수 있다.

7S 모델의 유래. 역사

The 7-S Framework was first mentioned in the journal "Business Horizons" in an article "Structure Is Not Organization" by Robert H. Waterman, Thomas J. Peters and Julien R. Phillips in June 1980. It appeared also in "In Search of Excellence" by Peters and Waterman, and was taken up as a basic tool by the global management consultancy company McKinsey. Since then it is known as their 7-S model.

7가지 S의 의미

공유 가치 (Shared Values, 또는 초월적인 공동목표 superordinate goals).

McKinsey 모델의 상호연결하는 중심이 되는 것은 공유 가치이다. 조직이 대표하고 믿고 있는 것. 중심 신념 및 태도. 비교: Strategic Intent [전략적 의도]

전략(Strategy)

확인된 목표를 달성하기 위해 기업의 희소자원을 시간적으로 배치한 계획. 환경, 경쟁, 고객.
 

구조(Structure)

조직의 하부단위가 상호 연관되어 있는 방식. 중앙집권적이고 기능적 부서(톱다운); 분권화; 매트릭스, 네트워크, 보유 등.

시스템(System)

작업이 어떻게 완수되어야 하는 지에 대한 절차, 프로세스 및 일과 재무 시스템; 리쿠르팅, 승진 및 성과평과 시스템; 정보 시스템.
 

직원(Staff)

조직 내 직원의 수와 유형.
 

스타일(Style)

핵심 경영자가 조직의 목표를 달성하기 위하여 행동하는 방법 및 조직의 문화 스타일. 비교: 관리 방식.
 

기술(Skills)

하나의 전체로서 조직 구성원들의 특별한 능력. 비교: 핵심역량.

7S 모델의 강점. 이점

• 비효과적인 조직을 이해하기 위한 분석적인 도구.
• 조직의 변화에 대한 지침.
• 합리적이고 하드한 요소를 정서적이고 소프트한 요소들과 조합.
• 경영자는 7가지 요인들을 모두 수평적이고 상호연관성있게 다루어야 한다.
