7-S and Change Management In a change management program all 7 S-es must be included. So it is not a tool to change, but a tool to be in control of all elements.

Using 7S for Change Management One obvious way to use 7S in change management would be to analyze, describe, discuss and communicate the CURRENT situation and the FUTURE (desired) situation with respect to each element and then to design ways or strategies to go from A to B.

7-S for Change Management The 7-S framework provides a suitable framework for developing a change management programme. In the first step in a change management development process we decide what the change objective will be.
The next steps are to identify what will have to changed within each of the 7 S's in order to reach the objective.
This can only be an iterative (repeating) process because changes in one of the seven may impact upon each of the other six.
Also remember that "systems" means all business processes, including financial.
The proper use of the 7 S's as an analysis tool will help to ensure that all issues will be addressed during development of the change programme.

7-S and Change Management @Jaap de Jonge (Editor) : In Holland we use German terms for this situation.
The current situation is the "IST" stuation
The future situation is the "SOLL" situation
The most important action is the description of actions you need to take to reach the "SOLL" situation, and what is the influence for each action on every separate S. Good luck.

Applying the 7S Model in Change Management Another usage of the 7S model in change processes is that it shows that a change made in one S will have an impact on all other S-es.
Thus, if a planned change is to be effective, then change must be accompanied by complementary changes in other S-es.

Usage of the 7S Framework in a Change Management Program This is a powerful framework for tracking and managing any change program in an enterprise. It ensures that any change in any area is effectively tracked and managed to ensure that impact on their areas is also properly managed.
The soft and hard areas of the business and its change are considered in a single view in the 7S model.

Another Way of Using the 7-S Framework to Analyze/Guide Organizational Change As already mentioned above, we can audit an organization using the 7S framework in terms of "as is - to be" basis (optionally adapting the 7-S framework for the particular use). Here you are doing an analysis BEFORE trying to implement the organizational change.
But we can also use the framework in terms of "to be - as is" basis, looking back at some change that has NOT worked, identifying the gaps or overlooked areas in the implementation plans through the 7-S framework and then methodically rework implementation plans based on 7S. Then you use McKinsey's model to analyze change AFTER we tried to implement some change.

The Model of 7 S is a Key Reference in Strategy @Jaap de Jonge: Thank for your fine statement. You are quite right. We must evaluate the path and trajectory of development. The 7S Model is also useful to choose a great reference, to compare the progression of the performances, on a spatial basis, ceteris paribus.

Various Types of Change Have a Different Effect on the 7 S-es @Jaap de Jonge: Change in organisations as a result of new Vision as opposed to adapting to enviromental shifts can be tricky in how you apply the 7S model.
- In a Vision-driven change there might be a change in all the 7S-es, but
- For an environmental-driven change there might be need to maintain some S-es while making radical shifts in others.

Each Change Process is Different @Phillip Phiri: Each major change process is different and that will be reflected in the S-es that must change.
The good news is that we can still use the 7S model to analyze, communicate and explain (at a high level) what things have to change and what things should remain.
I believe the number of S-es that require adjustments can be in the range from only 1 to all 7.

Guiding a Change Program with 7-S Model @Jaap de Jonge: I see what you mean, I have noted that some organisations have the approach that all the 7 have to shift to align with new direction. I guess they such organziations need more insight into the application of the model.
