Applications of the 7-S Framework

While some models of organizational effectiveness go in and out of fashion, one that has persisted is the McKinsey 7S framework. Developed in the early 1980s by Tom Peters and Robert Waterman, two consultants working at the McKinsey & Company consulting firm, the basic premise of the model is that there are seven internal aspects of an organization that need to be aligned if it is to be successful.
The 7S model can be used in a wide variety of situations where an alignment perspective is useful, for example to help you:
- Improve the performance of a company;
- Examine the likely effects of future changes within a company;
- Align departments and processes during a merger or acquisition;
- Determine how best to implement a proposed strategy.

	7S is a Powerful Change Tool McKinsey's 7S is very appropriate and I often use it even to the extent of encouraging my management students to utilize it when scrutinizing and analyzing their organization with the desire to change. Powerful tool!

	Using the 7 S Model The 7-S model, though one of the powerful tools for strategic analysis and implementation, and even more powerful when combined with other tools, can on its own be used to see a holistic view of an organisation. When conducted properly, it can reveal leaks in an organisation and show opportunities that are not utilized. I have had the opportunity of reviewing an organisation using the 7S as the base tool and the CEO was amazed at some of the issues that were found.

	Practical Tools for Deploying 7S The entire model is built on shared values. If the staff have no specific value memes to start working from, the fate of the company will be unpredictable. Unfortunately, still little is known to use for the deployment and diffusion of new values memes.
