Sei (6) Approcci al Cambiamento di Kotter e di Schlesinger è un modello per evitare, far diminuire o minimizzare la resistenza al cambiamento nelle organizzazioni.
Motivi per la resistenza al cambiamento
Secondo Kotter e Schlesinger (1979), ci sono quattro ragioni per cui determinate persone sono resistenti al cambiamento:

Interesse personale parrocchiale. Alcune persone si preoccupano di più dell'implicazione del cambiamento per loro stessi e come può interessare i loro propri interessi, piuttosto che tener conto degli effetti sul successo del business.

Incomprensione. Problemi di comunicazione; informazioni inadeguate.

Bassa tolleranza al cambiamento. Determinate persone sono molto sensibili alla sicurezza ed alla stabilità nel lavoro.

Valutazioni differenti della situazione. Alcuni impiegati possono non essere d'accordo con i motivi del cambiamento e con i vantaggi e gli svantaggi del processo del cambiamento.
Sei metodi per trattare la resistenza al cambiamento
Kotter e Schlesinger hanno precisato i seguenti sei (6) metodi di cambiamento per trattare la resistenza al cambiamento:

Formazione e Comunicazione. Dove c' è una mancanza di informazioni o ci sono informazioni ed analisi inesatte. Uno dei modi migliori per superare la resistenza al cambiamento è: informare ed istruire la gente sullo sforzo del cambiamento in anticipo. La precedente formazione e comunicazione aiuta gli impiegati a vedere la logica nello sforzo del cambiamento. Ciò riduce voci non fondate ed errate riguardo agli effetti del cambiamento nell'organizzazione.

Partecipazione e Coinvolgimento. Quando gli iniziatori non hanno tutte le informazioni necessarie per progettare il cambiamento e gli altri hanno un considerevole potere a resistere. Quando gli impiegati sono coinvolti nello sforzo del cambiamento essi avranno più voglia di cambiare piuttosto che di resistere. Questo metodo probabilmente farà diminuire la resistenza di quelli che acconsentono semplicemente al cambiamento.

Facilitazione e Supporto. Laddove la gente resiste al cambiamento, a causa di problemi di aggiustamento. Essendo di appoggio agli impiegati durante i periodi difficili, i manager possono pevenire delle potenziali resistenze. Il supporto manageriale aiuta gli impiegati ad affrontare il loro timore e l'ansia durante il periodo di transizione. La base della resistenza al cambiamento è probabile che sia: la percezione che ci sarà una certa forma di effetto nocivo provocato dal cambiamento nell'organizzazione. Tipici per questo metodo sono la formazione speciale e la consulenza, fuori dai normali locali di ufficio.

Trattativa ed Accordo. Dove qualcuno o un certo gruppo può perdersi a causa di un cambiamento e dove quell'individuo o gruppo ha un considerevole potere a resistere. I manager possono combattere la resistenza offrendo incentivi agli impiegati per non resistere al cambiamento. Ciò può essere fatto permettendo alla gente che sta resistendo al cambiamento di bloccare determinati elementi di cambiamento che li minacciano. O alla gente che resiste al cambiamento possono essere offerti incentivi a lasciare l'azienda attraverso buyouts iniziali o pensioni. Per evitare l'esperienza dello sforzo del cambiamento. Questo metodo sarà adatto nel caso in cui quelli che resistono al cambiamento sono in una posizione di potere.

Manipolazione e Cooperazione. Dove le altre tattiche non funzioneranno o sono troppo costose. Kotter e Schlesinger suggeriscono che una tecnica efficace di manipolazione è: cooperare con la gente che sta resistendo al cambiamento. La cooperazione comporta l'introduzione di una persona in un gruppo di pianificazione della gestione del cambiamento per l'apparenza piuttosto che per un contributo sostanziale. Ciò comporta spesso la selezione di leader di persone che resisteno al cambiamento a partecipare allo sforzo del cambiamento. A questi leader può essere dato un ruolo simbolico nel processo decisionale, senza minacciare lo sforzo del cambiamento. Si noti che: se questi leader ritiengono di essere stati ingannanti, è probabile che facciano maggiore resistenza di quanto ne avrebbero fatta qualora sarebbe stati inclusi nella direzione degli sforzi del cambiamento.

Coercizione Esplicita ed Implicita. Dove la velocità è essenziale. Da usare soltanto come ultima spiaggia. I manager possono forzare esplicitamente o implicitamente gli impiegati ad accettare il cambiamento, eliminare la resistenza al cambiamento può condurre a: perdite del lavoro, scioglimenti, trasferimenti di impiegati, o mancate promozioni per gli impiegati.
