В 1989 Gary Hamel и C.K. Prahalad сделали переворот, опубликовав статью, озаглавленную «Strategic Intent». Она была опубликованна в Harvard Business Review. Hamel и Prahalad утверждают, что для достижения успеха, компания должна согласовать свою цель со своими средствами через Strategic Intent (Стратегический замысел).

Что такое Strategic Intent (Стратегический замысел)?

В своей книге, Hamel и Prahalad определяют Strategic Intent (Стратегический замысел) как: амбициозную и непреодолимую мечту; которая заряжает эмоциональной и интеллектуальной энергией для путешествия в будущее. Если стратегическая архитектура (крупномасштабный план внедрения новых функциональностей, приобретения новых компетенций, миграции существующих компетенций и реконфигурирования видов взаимодействия с клиентами) является мозгом, то стратегический замысел - это сердце. Он должен выражать чувство напряжения (вызова) в том, что текущие ресурсы и возможности недостаточны для реализации задачи.
 

Свойства Strategic Intent (Стратегический замысел)

Hamel и Prahalad описали следующие 3 свойства стратегического замысла: направление, открытие и судьба.

1. Чувство направления (Sense of direction). Определенная точка зрения о долгосрочных перспективах рынка или конкурентоспособности, которые фирма надеется реализовать в течение последующего десятилетия. Это должен быть взгляд на будущее и он должен выражать чувство направленности.
2. Чувство открытия (Sense of discovery). Стратегический замысел дифференцирует; он подразумевает наличие уникальной точки зрения в отношении будущего. Он дает  сотрудникам обещание исследовать новую конкурентную территорию.
3. Чувство судьбы (Sense of destiny). Стратегический замысел имеет эмоциональную сторону; это цель, которую сотрудники воспринимают как действительно ценную.

Типичный процесс Стратегического замысла из 3 стадий

1. Установите Стратегический замысел, имеющий все 3 описанные выше параметра.
2. Установите задачи. Найдите соотвествующие задачи и донесите их до всего персонала. Эти задачи станут средством для достижения Стратегического замысла. Например: Предположим, что Стратегический замысел Canon является следующим: «Превзойти Xerox». Стратегическая задача могла бы быть: Создать домашнюю копировальную машину с плановой ценой $1000.
3. Расширение полномочий работника в Стратегическом замысле. Ключом в любом процессе Стратегического замысла является следующее: понимание того, что достижение Стратегического замысла является делом каждого. Задача высшего исполнительного руководства заключается в том, чтобы «удержать мудрость муравейника»: измените традиционный вид коммуникации "сверху-вниз" на поток информации и новых идей "снизу-вверх" в организации.

Происхождение этого подхода к корпоративной стратегии и стратегическому мышлению в целом связанно с драматическим послевоенным восхождением японских компаний. Японская экономика все больше и больше доминировала на мировых рынках, поставив перед собой изначально амбиции, которые считались бы на западе нереалистичными. Нереалистичными в том, что касается их ресурсов и возможностей. Одержимость победой была создана и поддерживалась на всех уровнях организации. Таким образом была создана основа 10 - 20-летнему лидерству на мировых рынках.
