En 1989, Gary Hamel y C.K. Prahalad agitaron el mundo con su artículo titulado “Strategic Intent (Intención Estratégica)”. Éste fue publicado en The Harvard Business Review. Hamel y Prahalad discuten que para lograr el éxito, una compañía debe reconciliar su propósito (finalidad) con sus medios a través de la Intención Estratégica.
¿Qué es la Intención Estratégica?
En su libro, Hamel y Prahalad definen La Intención Estratégica como: un ambicioso y obligatorio sueño que motiva; el mismo que proporciona la energía emocional e intelectual para un viaje al futuro. Si la arquitectura estratégica (un modelo de alto nivel para el despliegue de nuevas funcionalidades, la adquisición de nuevas capacidades o la migración de capacidades existentes, y configurar un nuevo interfaz con los clientes) es el cerebro, la iniciativa estratégica es el corazón. Debe expresar una sentimiento de estar al límite (desafío) en que los recursos y capacidades actuales no son suficientes para la tarea.
Cualidades del Intención Estratégica
Hamel y Prahalad proporcionaron los siguientes tres atributos de la Intención Estratégica: dirección, descubrimiento, y destino.
- Sentido de la dirección. Un punto de vista particular sobre el mercado a largo plazo o la competitividad que una firma espera construir el excedente la década que viene o tan. Debe ser una vista del futuro y debe expresar un sentido de la dirección que unifica y personaliza.
- Sentido del descubrimiento. Una iniciativa estratégica distingue; implica un punto de vista competitivo único respecto al futuro. Mantiene a los empleados comprometidos en explorar el nuevo territorio competitivo.
- Sentido del destino. La Intención Estratégica tiene un lado emocional; es una meta que los empleados perciben como un objeto intrínsecamente valioso.
Proceso típico de tres pasos de la Intención Estratégica
- Fije la Intención Estratégica, defina las tres características indicadas arriba.
- Fije los desafíos. Encuentre los desafíos apropiados y comuniqúelos a todo el personal. Estos desafíos son los medios para lograr la Intención Estratégica. Por ejemplo: Suponga que la Intención Estratégica de Canon es: “Vencer a Xerox”. Un desafío estratégico podía ser: Desarrolle una copiadora casera a un precio meta de $1000.
- Empoderamiento del Intención Estratégica. La clave de cualquier proceso de Intención Estratégica es: darse cuenta que alcanzar (entrar a) la Intención Estratégica es un tema que implica a todos. La tarea de la Administración superior aquí es “capturar la sabiduría de la colina de las hormigas”: Cambiar el estilo tradicional de comunicación hacia arriba por una corriente ascendente de la comunicación desde las nuevas ideas que vienen desde toda la organización.
Los antecedentes de este acercamiento para la estrategia de la corporación, y el pensamiento estratégico general explicó el dramático ascenso de las compañías japones en la post guerra. La economía japonesa dominó cada vez más los mercados mundiales, teniendo ambiciones iniciales que en el oeste hubieran sido consideradas altamente idealistas. Poco realistas con respecto a sus recursos y capacidades. Una obsesión por ganar fue creada y sostenida en todos los niveles de la organización. Así fue creada la base para un período de 10 - a 20 años de liderazgo global del mercado.
