Das Produktlebenszyklus-Modell kann helfen, Reifephasen der Produkte und der Industrien zu analysieren.
Die Bezeichnung wurde zum ersten Mal von Theodore Levitt 1965 in einem Harvard Business Review Artikel verwendet: „Exploit the Product Life Cycle“ (Vol. 43, November Dezember 1965, pp. 81-94). Jede Firma sucht ständig nach Wegen, zukünftige Cash Flows zu erhöhen, indem sie Einnahmen vom Verkauf von Produkten und Dienstleistungen maximiert. Cash Flows erlauben einer Firma, ihre Entwicklungsfähigkeit beizubehalten, in die Entwicklung neuer Produkte zu investieren und ihre Belegschaft zu verbessern. Alles dieses in einer Bemühung, zusätzlichen Marktanteil zu erwerben und ein Leiter in seiner jeweiligen Industrie zu werden.
Ein konstanter und nachhaltiger Strom von Cash Flows (Einnahmen) aus Produktverkäufen ist der Schlüssel zu jeder langfristigen Investition, und der beste Weg, einen beständigen Einnahmestrom zu erreichen, ist, eine oder mehrer Cash Cows zu haben. Cash Cows sind Produkte, die einen großen Marktanteil in reifen Märkten erzielt haben.
Darüber hinaus wird der moderne Produktlebenszyklus kürzer und kürzer. Viele Produkte in reifen Industrien werden wiederbelebt durch Produktdifferenzierung und Marktsegmentierung. Organisationen schätzen in zunehmendem Maße Produktlebenszykluskosten und Einnahmen neu ein, weil die Zeit, die vorhanden ist, um ein Produkt zu verkaufen und die Investition zurückzugewinnen, schrumpft.
Obgleich der Produktlebenszyklus schrumpft, verlängert sich das operative Leben vieler Produkte. Zum Beispiel hat sich das operative Leben einiger langlebiger Güter, wie Automobile und Geräte, deutlich erhöht. Infolgedessen müssen die Firmen, die diese Produkte produzieren ihr Marktleben und Nutzungsdauer in Betracht ziehen, wenn sie Planungen durchführen. In zunehmendem Maße versuchen Firmen, Einnahmen und Gewinne über den gesamten Lebenszyklus zu optimieren. Sie tun dies durch die Betrachtung von Produktgarantien, Ersatzteilen und der Fähigkeit, vorhandene Produkte zu verbessern.
Es ist offensichtlich, dass das Produktlebenszykluskonzept bedeutende Auswirkung auf Geschäftsstrategie und Unternehmensperformance hat. Die Produktlebenszyklusmethode identifiziert die eindeutigen Phasen, die Verkäufe eines Produktes beeinflussen. Von der Einführung des Produktes bis zu seinem Ruhestand.
Die Phasen im Produktlebenszyklus
- Einführungsphase. Das Produkt wird im Markt durch eine fokussierte und intensive Marketing-Bemühung eingeführt, die entworfen ist, um eine klare Identität zu etablieren und maximales Bewußtsein zu fördern. Viele Versuchs- oder Impulskäufe werden in dieser Phase auftreten.
- Wachstumsphase. Kann durch erhöhte Verkäufe und das Hervortreten von Konkurrenten erkannt werden. Auf der Verkäuferseite wird die Wachstumsphase auch durch nachhaltige Marketing-Tätigkeiten gekennzeichnet. Einige Kunden führen Wiederholungskäufe durch.
- Reifephase. Diese Phase kann erkannt werden, wenn Konkurrenten beginnen, den Markt zu verlassen. Auch die Verkaufsgeschwindigkeit ist drastisch reduziert und Umsatz erreicht ein stetiges Niveau. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt kaufen für gewöhnlich loyale Kunden das Produkt.
- Rückgangsphase. Die andauernden Effekte der Konkurrenz, ungünstige Wirtschaftslage, neue Trends, usw. erklären häufig den Rückgang in den Umsätzen.
Einige Variationen des Industrielebenszyklusmodells sind entwickelt worden, um die Entwicklung des Produktes, des Marktes und/oder der Industrie zu handhaben. Obgleich die Modelle ähnlich sind, unterscheiden sie sich hinsichtlich der Zahl und der Namen der Phasen. Hier ist eine Liste einiger bedeutender Modelle:
