Definitions of Human Resources Management

I am looking for a good definition of HRM... Wikipedia says Human Resource Management is the strategic and coherent approach to the management of an organization's most valued assets - the people working there who individually and collectively contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the business.
But is this definition of HRM widely accepted?

Include IT in the Definition of HRM

Yes, it is quite general and specific at the same time. It illustrates the strategy of the firm, individualism(esteem) and collectivism (social) and is connected to the goals of the organization.
After the tremendous IT (MIS) bang in management, I suggest it is of great significance to include technology in the definition.

Best Definition of HRM

1. HRM is related with management processes of any organization to achieve
- Social objectives (legal compliance, benefits, union management relation)
- Organizational objectives (human resource planning, employees relation
selection, t&d, appraisal, placement, assessment)
- Functional objectives (appraisal, placement, assessment)
- Personal objectives (t&d, placement, compensation, assessment).
2. HRM deals with people at work in the sense of organising, motivating, guiding and leading of people for the accomplishment of goals of the organization. Its main objective is to maintain better human relations in the organization by development, application and evaluation of policies, procedures and programmes relating to the individuals in the organization in order to optimise their contribution to achieve organizational objectives.
So we can say that HRM is heterogeneous, multidisciplinary approach by nature.

Human Resources is like an Assembly Line

HR is something like a 20th century assembly line where first the exact number of components have to be made available and then they need to be fitted in sequence to make the final product. The assembly line is the best analogy of HR. The two classical ways of assembling a product is the British system and the German system.
In the British system value added goods are bought and then fitted to make a product.
On the other hand, in the German system everything from the nut and bolt is produced under one roof and finally assembled to make a product.
Historically the German product has won :-).

Human Resources is Like an Assembly Line

@Achyut karve: This is a perfect analogy, Achyut! And I do support the "German" :) approach in HRM.
