The Basis of Six Sigma? Statistics and Discipline

Many of the tools of Six Sigma (and the concept of lean manufacturing with which Six Sigma is most closely identified) can be found in statistical process control, total quality management, statistics, process improvement, inventory control and operations management textbooks.
However, it is not just the tools that deliver Six Sigma performance - it is the logic, discipline and practical application that drive the search for perfection.

	The Basis of Six Sigma is Data Six sigma is a tool based on data. The data should be correct and from the process under observation. This is backed by scientific statistical tools for interpretation and conclusion. The selection of the tool depends on the expertise of six sigma practitioner and it largely determines the accuracy of predictions based on the use of it.

	Six Sigma is a Psychologist's Invention Six sigma (at least in part) is based on ignorance of process control and misunderstood statistical concepts. The proof of this is the so-called "1.5 sigma shift" A source (just ignore the profanity) to be read: Pillars of Six Sigma Stupidity. The obvious place to check, is the man who created Six Sigma, Dr Mikel Harry (a psychologist). Harry is the fellow who is remembered for saying “I am not an engineer. I have to admit I did not know what Bill [Smith] was talking about”.
