Normative Re-Educative Strategies

Normative re-educative strategies are the strategies for organizational change & OD based on the belief that people are social beings and will adhere to cultural norms and values. Change & development is based on re-defining and re-interpreting existing norms and values, and developing commitments to new ones.

Normative Re-Educative Strategies

@Pashupati Nath verma: Indeed, normative re-educative strategies are one type of change management approaches based on the thought that people are guided by the (socio-)cultural norms that they subscribe to. People are social beings and will adhere to cultural norms and values.
So these change management approaches try to change something by redefining new or by re-interpreting existing norms and values, and then developing commitments to the new ones.
This is possible, because for the most part, most people want to "fit in" and "go along." They will "go with the flow."

And indeed, changes in organizations do not always take place because they make sense to people at a rational or cognitive level, but they can also happen because they are in keeping with the personal values and belief system of the people. Because if a particular change appeals to the socio-cultural norms of individuals affected by the change, they are more likely to be successfully implemented.
❗Note that the term "strategies" in "Normative Re-Educative Strategies" is not in the sense of actual strategy formation, but should be viewed as an Organizational Development approach.

Normative Re-educative Strategies

Yes, normative re-educative strategies are approaches used to bring about organizational change by altering the values, beliefs, and attitudes of individuals within an organization and re-educating individuals to align with these changes. Here's what the 2 terms in it mean:
  • Normative : This part of the strategy focuses on establishing new norms within the organization. It involves creating an environment where the desired behavior is the norm.
For example, if a company wants to promote a more inclusive culture, they might implement norms such as actively listening to all team members during meetings. This is typically done through leading by example, setting clear expectations, and providing positive reinforcement for the desired behavior.
  • Re-educative: This aspect involves educating and training individuals to adopt the new norms. For instance, the company may conduct workshops on diversity and inclusion, providing employees with the knowledge and tools to practice inclusive behavior. It often includes workshops, training sessions, and other forms of education to teach employees the new values and behaviors expected within the organization.
