Change: the Only Constant for Managers and Leaders

The constancy of change forces itself into our consciousness because of the dynamism of the human condition. Change is the only constant in the leadership/management process. The key to my mind is in having leadership that is sensitive to the dynamism of the market place and organization and adapting to meet its many challenges.
Jeannie Daniel Duck, in her article "Managing Change: The Art of Balancing", opines that '...the real contribution of leadership in a time of change, lies in managing the dynamics… The fundamental job of leadership is to deal with dynamics of change, the confluence and congruence of the forces that change unleashes, so that the company is better prepared to compete.'
That is the crux of leadership. It does not lie in change theories, illuminating as they may be on the path to change and our behavior towards it, leaders and followers alike.

Agree

It is true! Change is the key for success. If we are not able to change stereotypes we won't be able to be competitive.

Limited Way of Thinking

In my experience, we are used and like to see a linear trend way of thinking, but this is the way to fail. We must understand that our limited way of thinking tries to force our decisions in a non-changing environment. Therefore the best way to succeed is to build many scenes to include most of the possibilities.

Change: Is it the Flavour of the Month

Sometimes simplicity is required to lead and manage change. Creating small wins, communicating frequently, and implementing continuous improvements are the way to succeed (Leading Change: John Kotter, 1996).
I agree that leadership in the form of a "change champion" is highly useful. However, I have managed some projects, where you start out of the box only to come back into the box. How often have you watched a change occur because of a new leader, only to find out that the change was not needed.
We need to watch out that change is not just the new flavour of the month.

Change is Competitive Edge and Threat

Change - it's the only tool in modern capitalism that may lead to survive the middle and small businesses in a highly competitive market.
However for large businesses stability is desirable in the sphere of information technologies.

I just want to say that I really appreciate the responses. My first inclination was to form one of my own but, after reading through them, I have resolved to just say thanks!

Change: the Only Constant for Leaders

In today´s turbulent business environment, change is a fact of life. People and organizations must constantly cope with unfamiliar events and situations in order to survive and stay competitive.

Leader Must Direct Change Towards Ultimate Goal

Distinguish 2 Forms of Change

I find it more useful to view the concept of change as adaptation and/or innovation. Without these perspectives, the leadership imperative to manage change is undervalued.

Change Requires Leaders

Change is a fact of life, nothing is constant except the change. Change is a true challenge and needs leaders; not managers. In order to convince people to quit what they hold dear - their daily habits, tools, loyalties and ways of thinking - with nothing more to offer perhaps than a possibility for improvement is a true danger.
Yet in the business management the only way to survive in a turbulent, dynamic and ever changing competitive environment is to continuously carry on business process improvements, redesign, reengineering and changing organizational structure to align it with corporate strategy.

Change as a Constant

In my view leadership plays a pivotal role in the change process. Leadership is about seeing far and continuously create that preparedness in order to take advantage of the future. Indeed in the future is the concern of leadership due to the missions, and the ability to create strategies to succeed.

Ability to Visualize the Horizon Very Early

There is no doubt that change is inevitable but practical & effective leaders are able to visualize the broader horizon early on and steer their organization without any specific need to 'manage change'. True leaders are those who see ahead and deftly steer their organizations.

Is Adaptation Adequate? Can it Lead to Lack of Change

The right leadership with grassroots collaboration is the key. I feel adaptation can be a way to accept the inevitable and let nature take its course.
However, adaptation may take too long to find solutions to the critical issues we face today. Many issues today are 'created' by us - so we may need to 'create' the solutions as well. What about solutions that engage with how ecosystems function?

Change or be Changed!

It's better we agree that change is constant, everything changes, other than change.
If we do not agree, then we will see ourselves "being changed" at both personal & professional life... Change or be changed!

Understanding and Dealing with Change

Whatever words we use, we are all agreed that change has a constant presence in our work and in our private lives. Accepting this means that we must move on and learn to do something about it. What we do will vary considerably in terms of how we are viewing the particular change which has imposed itself on our situation or our psyche.
The 'arts' i.e. theater, writing, performing, painting etc have been making successful inroads into the business world as vehicles for learning to deal with / manage / embrace / capitalize upon change usually through the process of presenting metaphors which provide clearer explanation and understanding of the reasons, the causes, the presence and the consequences of change.
A new book by Dr Clare Morgan of Oxford University 'What Poetry Brings to Business' is a very powerful stimulant to thinking about change and how to deal with ambiguity and uncertainty. Read, enjoy and learn... Seems a good combination to me.
