What is QCDSM. Meaning QCDSM is an acronym that stands for Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, and Morale. These items represent an overall approach that is used to improve and measure business processes. While mostly used in manufacturing, construction, and warehousing industries, the principle can also be applied to other sectors.
QCDSM allows to take potentially large issues and break them down into many smaller ones. These smaller issues can then be reviewed separately, prioritized, and any necessary efforts and resources can be assigned to resolve them. This avoids professionals to focus on aspects and avoids feeling overwhelmed by a large issue.
These are the 5 elements of QCDSM:
Q - Quality: Confirm to specs, consistency, grade.
C - Cost: Labor costs, equipment costs, material costs.
D - Delivery: Material inventory, equipment costs, material costs.
S - Safety: Employees, customers.
M - Morale: Work conditions, brand reputation.
I've also seen "QCDSME", the extra E indicates "Environment".
