Why Should one be a Leader?

After studying some of the threads I somewhat miss the discussion "Why are we leaders?" Ownership leaders are of course obvious. Is it the role as manager or is it the own personal development that is the driving factor for entering the leader role, or is it something else? Does the reason has anything to do with the results?

The Leadership Challenge

There is no one route for a leader. Their background's will vary and so do the circumstances. The nature of the organization, its culture, the situation (or issue), or the people involved will all dictate when and where a person will be a good leader. I Kouzes and Posner in their book, 'The Leadership Challenge, 4th Edition' (2007, 4th edition) describe how to become a better leader.

Reasons for Being a Leader

Leadership is a way of life. Leadership starts at home, in our family circle through different aspects in life. I do not want to say that leadership is innate, but it is a process that must be learned and well understood. Remember that leadership can only be possible through interactions. Find your followers/your audience and know how to treat them and your way to leadership is open.

Multiple Motivations for Assuming Leadership

We become leaders for different reasons.
As Bjorn mentioned, some are thrust into a position that requires them to become a leader in order to succeed (Business owners / entrepreneurs).
For me, it's the passion to develop others around me. It's a feedback loop. The more I pour into the lives of other people, the more they begin to respond in positive ways in their own lives and in the life of the organization, the more energy I receive from their improved effectiveness.

Motivation for Leadership is Caused by Circumstances

Leaders aren't born, they are motivated by their circumstances to create a vision, and inspire others to follow.

Reasons for Leadership

There are several reasons for leadership. It varies with the area where we apply it. So do the qualities of a leader.
For example:
- Corporate managers are leaders by role;
- Political leaders are so more due to their own personal development;
- Social leaders need persuasive abilities;
- Spiritual leaders don't need any of the above but still people follow them.
But one thing common to all is results/success. Results is the only thing that can make a leader or keep leadership.

A True Leader.... Has the Fortune to Be River Instead of Being a Lagoon

There is a poem in Spanish,
Que suerte he tenido de nacer, de haber tenido la fortuna
De ser rio en lugar de ser laguna,
Ser lluvia en lugar de ver llover
(I am lucky and had the fortune to be born as a river instead of a lagoon, to be rain instead of seeing it raining)
However there are few leaders, only 3% lead the way...

Leadership is a Need

Further to @Javier Elenes...
Leadership is given by the Nature. Yes, it is nice to be a river... Another side of a coin: leadership is also a need, a need of a leader. Just insulate a leader from people and he/she will die (a river will dry).
Leaders are born by nature, but their talent appears and is motivated by circumstances….
