Leadership Style for a New Institution

My comment is a question seeking some guidance: here is my challenge and need some perspectives on. I am part of a new institution where everything is being done form scratch. The team has agreed on some core values in line with the established mission and vision statements. What is the role of the CEO and what style of management should be used in trying to build this organization around those core values?

New Institution: SVM Style

Best practices here is to treat the new operating environment in the spirit of a start up: Silicon Valley Management style (SVM), but as with all sound business and leadership techniques - synergies should be encouraged, looked for and leveraged - but only when they reflect and reinforce the stated core values. Flexibility and response times are key. And the CEO is the team member who also has the ultimate leadership role and, at the end of the day - carries the can.

Leading a New Institution

Since this is a new organization, the CEO absolutely must make sure his or her vision is clear and that the team also has a clear understanding of the Mission, Values, and Goals. It sounds like you have those statements, but be sure everyone really understands them and their individual part in that mission's success. Leadership style is dependent on the individuals in the organization. You will probably find some in each of the quadrants of the SL model. It's the leader's job to figure out who's where. If the CEO and other leaders haven't received any training in leadership, get some, now!

Leading a New Institution

Generally the role of the CEO is ministerial, he/she can delegate task(s) to his/her people in the organization... In a team I agree with Leslie that he/she must work as a team member especially in formulating VMG.
As to the leadership style(s), that depends on what you mean by "new institution"... Because if it refers to a new branch or satellite then I guess there's already an existing system and the CEO had the training and experience(s) needed to start the new institution otherwise I agree with Bob that he/she needs to acquire the necessary competencies to operate it.
