Aunque el modelo del OODA fue claramente creado para propósitos militares, los elementos de la misma teoría se pueden también aplicar a la estrategia de negocios. Boyd desarrolló la teoría basado en su anterior experiencia como piloto de combate, y trabajo sobre maniobrabilidad de la energía. Él uso esta experiencia previa, primero para explicar como lograr la victoria en el combate aire-aire, pero en los últimos años de su carrera, amplió su teoría del Lazo OODA a una gran estrategia que derrotaría al enemigo estratégicamente gracias a una  parálisis psicologica.

Boyd acentuó que la estrategia debe girar siempre alrededor de cambiar el comportamiento del enemigo, no aniquilando sus fuerzas. El paralelo entre las ideas de Boyd y la obra maestra del Sun Tzu, “el arte de la guerra”, es obvio. Boyd y el Sun Tzu abogan por las ideas de equilibrio, del engaño, de la variabilidad y de la fluidez de la acción, de la sorpresa, schock, y de atacar la estrategia del enemigo.

Coronel Boyd vio al enemigo (y a nosotros mismos) como sistemas que actúan a través de un procedimiento de toma de decisión. Este procedimiento de toma de decisiones se basa en las observaciones del mundo a su alrededor. El enemigo observará las condiciones económicas expuestas y recopilará la información exterior para orientar el sistema a las amenazas percibidas. Boyd indica que la fase de orientación del lazo es el paso más importante, porque si el enemigo percibe las amenazas incorrectas, o entiende mal qué está sucediendo en el entorno alrededor de él, él orientará su pensamiento (y fuerzas) hacia direcciones incorrectas y tomará en última instancia decisiones incorrectas. Boyd dijo que este ciclo de la toma de decisiones podría operar a diversas velocidades para el enemigo y para su propia organización. La meta debe ser terminar su proceso del OODA Loop (Lazo OODA) en un tiempo más rápido que el del enemigo, y tomar la acción para alargar el lazo del enemigo. Uno intenta conducir muchos más lazos “al interior” el lazo del enemigo, haciendo que el enemigo no pueda reaccionar ante cualquier cosa que le esté sucediendo.

Coronel Boyd indicó que el lazo del enemigo se puede alargar con una variedad de medios. La puntería de Boyd es generar centros de gravedad “no cooperativos” para el enemigo, a traves de ambigüedad, engaño, condiciones económicas ficticias, rápidas maniobras transitorias, y el uso de la ideas del Sun-Tzu's de Cheng y Ch'i. Aislando los centro de gravedad del enemigo y desarrollando desconfianza y la cohesión dentro del sistema (que los hace “no cooperativos”), la fricción será aumentada grandemente, la parálisis en el sistema fijará hacia adentro, y el enemigo se derrumbará en última instancia. Atacando el proceso del pensamiento del enemigo/competidor; su moral y su proceso de toma de decisiones puede ser destruido.
