Reasons for the 8th Habit

Anyone knows why the 8th habit came about. I feel it has to do with all the 7 not having the power of influence, no matter how proactive one remains, in bringing a significant change to the environment. The biggest culprit is the lack of top leadership support.
That's why the 8th talks of the much needed spiritual and cultural elements of the leadership challenge. I really don't know what more can Covey add further to make the crux of leadership meaning and commitment in defining effectiveness, success, greatness, excellence, results, etc.

The Evolution in Covey's 8 Habits

Yuvarajah: the 8th habit is evidence that Stephen Covey's journey continues.
When the 7 habits initially came out, it was about the individual becoming effective. It focused on self (becoming independent) and the relationship with another person (becoming interdependent).
Next came the 4 roles of leadership where the circle of influence was expanded outward to teams and organization. The four roles were:
1. Modeling (7 habits)
2. Pathfinding (mission, vision)
3. Empowering people, and
4. Aligning systems and structures.
The next logical outward expansions would be community, then society, country, planet, universe.
Now that you are "effective", the 8th habit is about becoming "significant" and having a voice that can be heard not just internally in one's own organization, but externally as well.
