什么是沉默的螺旋？

德国学者Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann用沉默的螺旋这一模型，来解释为什么有些人当意识到自己的观点是少数的时候，便不愿意在公共场合表达自己的见解。 沉默的螺旋描述了当人们作为少数派时所感受到的不断加强的压力。 该模型基于三个假设：

1. 每个人都有一个“准统计器官”（quasi-statistical organ），一种第六感， 不用民意测验，他们也能知道什么是压倒性的主流民意。
2. 人们有一种被隔离的恐惧，而且知道哪些行为有可能导致被社会隔离。
3. 所以，他们选择沉默，而不去表达被认为是少数派的意见， 主要是出于被隔离的恐惧。

Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann在她1984年出版的书中，对公共舆论如何成为社会控制形式进行了解释。 每一个几乎本能地关注围绕着他们的各种观点， 并有意识地使自己的言行与主流观点靠拢。

与主流观点接近程度越高，他就越乐意在公开场合发表自己的见解。 一旦他发现主流观点发生了变化，不再流行，不再受宠， 他也就不会再积极地在公开场合发表观点。 如果民意和人的个人意见之间的觉得的距离增长，那个人将是较不可能想要表达他的看法。
