Abraham Maslow의 삶

Abraham Maslow는 1908년 4월 1일 뉴욕 브룩클린에서 태어났다. Maslow는 7남매중의 장남으로, 그의 부모는 교육을 많이 받지 못한 러시아에서 온 유태인 이민자였다. 그의 부모는 새로운 세상에서 자식이 최고가 되기를 바라고, 학문적으로 성공할 수 있도록 열심히 뒷바라지 해주었다. 당연히 Maslow는 어린 소년으로서 매우 외롭게 되었고, 책에서 도피처를 찾았다.

부모님을 만족시키기 위해, 처음에는 뉴욕시립대(CCNY)에서 법학을 공부했다. Maslow는 부모님의 반대에도 불구하고 종손녀인 Bertha Goodman와 결혼했다. 그리고 두 딸을 갖게 되었다.

Maslow는 위스콘신대학에서 공부하기 위하여 아내 Bertha와 위스콘신으로 이사하였다. 거기서 그는 심리학에 관심을 갖게 되었고 그의 학업은 급속도로 발전하기 시작했다. 대학에서 는 와 함께 작업하였다. Harlow는 아기 붉은털원숭이와 애착행동(attachment behavior)에 관한 실험으로 유명해졌다.

Maslow는 위스콘신 대학에서 심리학전공으로 1930년에 학사학위를, 1931년에 석사학위를, 1934년에 박사학위를 받았다. 졸업후 1년후에 Maslow는 콜럼비아에 있는 E.L. Thorndike와 작업하기 위하여 뉴욕으로 돌아갔고, 그 후 인간의 성에 대한 연구에 관심을 갖게 되었다.

그는 브룩클린 대학에서 전임으로 강의하기 시작했다. 그의 삶에서 이 기간동안에 그는 미국으로 특히 브룩클린으로 이민온 많은 유럽의 지식인들과 교류하였다. 몇몇 Gestalt [게슈탈트 지각이론] 심리학자 및 프로이드학파의 심리학자 뿐만 아니라 Adler, Fromm, Horney와 같은 사람들을 만났다.

1951년부터 Maslow는 Brandeis의 심리학부 학장으로 10년간 일하였고 거기서 Kurt Goldstein를 만났다. Goldstein는 그를 자아실현의 본보기라고 소개했고, Maslow는 자신만의 이론을 만들기 위한 작업을 시작하였다. 그는 거기서 자신의 이론을 만드는 작업보다 궁극적으로 더 중요하게 여긴 인간심리학에 대한 과업을 시작하였다. Maslow는 남은 여생을 캘리포니아에서 준은퇴하며(semi-retirement) 보냈다. 1970년 6월 8일 는 수년간의 병고로 심장마비로 사망하였다.

욕구의 계층 - 생리적 욕구 (Physiological needs )

생리적 욕구는 공기, 물, 음식, 수면, 성 등과 같은 아주 기초적인 욕구들이다. 이러한 기초욕구가 충족되지 않을 때, 인간은 질병, 자극, 고통, 불편 등을 느낄 수 있다. 이러한 감정들은 항상성(homeostasis)을 유지시키기 위해 가능한 한 빨리 이러한 감정들 완화시키도록 인간을 자극한다. 일단 이러한 감정들이 완화되면, 인간은 다른 것들을 생각하게 된다.

욕구의 계층- 안전 욕구(Safety needs)

안전욕구는 혼돈스런 세계에서 안정성과 일관성을 성취하는 것들을 다루고 있다. 이러한 욕구는 본질적으로 대부분 심리학적인 욕구들이다. 인간은 가정과 가족의 안전을 필요로 한다. 그러나 예를들어 학대남편에 의해 가족기능이 제대로 수행되지 않으면, 부인은 다음 수준의 욕구로 이동할 수 없게된다. 왜냐하면 부인은 계속 자신의 안전을 걱정해야 하기 때문이다. 사랑과 소속감같은 욕구는 그녀가 더 이상 두려움이 없을 때에야 나타난다. 우리 사회의 상당수가 법과 질서를 외치고 있다. 왜냐하면 그들은 이웃으로 산책을 나갈 만큼 충분히 안전하다고 느끼지 못하기 때문이다.

욕구의 계층 - 사랑과 소속감 (Love and belongingness needs)

이 욕구들은 다음 계층에 위치한다. 인간은 집단에 소속되고 싶어하는 욕구가 있다. 클럽, 작업집단, 종교집단, 가족, 갱 등등. 인간은 타인에 의해 받아들여지고 사랑(비성적,non-sexual) 받는 것을 느끼고 싶어한다. 공연 예술가는 박수를 감사하게 생각하고 있다. 우리는 필요한 존재가 될 필요가 있다. 비교: Hawthoren Effect [호손 효과]

욕구의 계층 - 자아존중의 욕구(Self-Esteem needs)

2가지 유형의 존중의 욕구가 있다. 첫번째 자아존중은 업무에 대한 역량 또는 숙련의 결과로 부터 오는 것이다. 둘째로, 다른 것들로부터 오는 관심과 인정 등이 있다. 이 욕구는 소속감의 욕구수준과 비슷하나, 존경을 받고싶어하는 것은 권력의 욕구와 관계가 있다.

욕구의 계층 - 자아실현(의 욕구

이것이 인간이 더욱더 인간이고 싶어하는 욕구이며, 인간이면 할 수 있는 모든 것이 되고 싶어하는 욕구이다. 모든 것을 가진 사람들은 그들의 잠재력을 극대화할 수 있다. 그들은 지식, 평화, 심미적인 경험, 자기 성취, 신과의 하나됨을 찾는다.
 

Maslow의 욕구계층이론은 1943-1954년 사이에서 개발되고, 1954년에 Motivation and Personality저널을 통해 널리 알려지게 되었다. 당시 욕구의 계층은 5가지 욕구로 구성되었다. Maslow의 가장 인기있는 책은 Toward a Psychology of Being(1968년)로써 몇개의 계층이 추가되었다.

욕구계층이론의 한계. 단점

이러한 계층구조에 지나치게 경직되지 않도록 주의해야 한다 :

• 실재로 인간은 한 단계씩 이러한 계층을 따라서 행동하지 않는다. 그들은 자신들의 욕구를 충족시키는 방식에서 훨씬 덜 구조화되어 있다. (Graves)
• 서로다른 문화적 배경을 가진 사람들은 다른 환경에서 서로 다른 욕구계층을 보일 수 있다. (Hofstede, Early)
• 다른 연구자들은 다른 욕구들 또한 중요하며 심지어 더욱 중요하다고 주장한다. 성취, 제휴, 권력의 욕구를 확인한 McClelland를 참고.
• 1968년에 Maslow는 그의 책에서 새로운 욕구를 추가하였다 : "Toward a Psychology of Being".

그럼에도 불구하고 최초의 5계층 모델은 대부분의 사람들에게 여전히 최초의 욕구계층모델로 남아있다.
