도덕적 의도란 무엇인가?

Nikos Mourkogiannis는 도덕적 의도에 관한 논문에서 리더십의 4가지 주요한 요인을 기술하고 있다. 이 요인들은 장기적인 경쟁우위를 확보하기 위해 조직을 이끌어가고 영감을 불어넣는데 사용될 수 있다. Strategy+Business誌 41권 2001년 겨울호에서 Mourkogiannis는 도덕적 의도는 하나의 가치로서 그 가치가 조작될 때 일부 개인들이 옳거나 가치있다고 여기는 본질적인 감정을 자극한다고 한다. 위대한 리더들은 장기적인 경쟁우위를 달성하기 위하여 조직을 이끌어나가고 영감을 불어넣는데 도덕적 의도를 어떻게 사용할 수 있는지를 학습해왔다.

Mourkogiannis는 오늘날 비즈니스에서 가장 성공적이고 영향력있는 4가지 범주의 도덕적 의도와 그에 상응하는 4가지 이상적인 리더십을 구별하고 있다 :

1. 발견(Discovery). 여기에서 도덕의 유형은 "새로운 것(the new)이다." 행동에 대한 도덕적 근거는 "나는 자유롭게 선택한다"는 것이다. 이러한 가치의 철학적인 배경은 덴마크 철학자 Søren Kierkegaard(1813-1855년)에 의해 제공되었다. 전형적인 예는 IBM, Sony, Intel, Virgin과 같은 혁신적이고 기술적인 기업에서 찾아볼 수 있다.

3. 이타주의(Altruism). 여기에서 도덕적 유형은 "도움이 되는 것(the helpful)이다." 행동의 도덕적 근거는 "도움이 되는 것이 행복을 증가시킨다"는 것이다. 이러한 가치의 철학적인 배경은 스코틀랜드 철학자 David Hume(1711-1776년)에 의해 제공되었다. 전형적인 예는 Wal-Mart, Marriott, the Body Shop 또는 경찰서, 자선단체 등에서 찾아볼 수 있다.
4. 영웅주의(Heroism). 여기에서 도덕적 유형은 "효과적인 것(the effective)이다." 행동으 도덕적 근거는 "효과적인 것이 성취할 수 있게 해준다"는 것이다. 이러한 가치의 철학적인 배경은 독일 철학자 프리드리히 니체(1844-1900년)에 의해 제공되었다. 전형적인 예는 S.G. Warburg, Microsoft, Ford, Exxon Mobil과 같은 야망있고 대담한 기업들에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 비교: Strategic Intent [전략적 의도]

각각의 도덕적 의도는 그 자체로서 그 조직에서 일하는 사람들이 그들이 속한 산업의 게임의 룰을 재정의하고 유례없는 결과를 창출하도록 자극한다. 도덕적 의도는 고객, 직원 그리고 다른 구성원들의 감성에 부합해야 한다.

4가지 도덕적 의도들은 위에서 언급한 철학적 전통에 기초하고 있다.

도덕적 의도 모델의 활용. 응용

• 도덕적 의도는 상호존중에 기초한 소속감 및 공유감을 구축하게 해줌으로써 종업원의 사기진작에 공헌한다.
• 그리고 사람들이 시장의 상태와 기회에 민감할 수 있게 함으로써 혁신을 진작시킨다.
• 또한 대기업에 존재하는 리스크 회피에 대응한다. 사람들은 선택된 도덕적 의도의 틀안에서 해결책을 찾도록 자극을 받는다.
• 그것은 사람들이 조직과 조직의 활동, 자산과 전략 사이에서 복잡한 적응을 이해하고 촉진하도록 해주는 통일적인 주제(unifying theme)를 제공한다.
• 기업의 리더들은 도덕적 의도와 전략을 일치시키고 관리하여야 한다. 도덕적 의도의 본질은 기업의 그 환경속에서 발전해 나가는 것을 도와야 한다.

도덕적 의도의 강점. 이점

1. 위에서 언급한 것처럼 도덕적 의도는 종업원의 사기에 공원하고, 혁신을 촉진시키고 리스크 회피에 대응하며 통일된 전략적 주제들을 제공하는 것이다.
2. 또한 도덕적 의도는 큰 수익을 거두는 곳이다. 뛰어난 장기적인 결과는 달성될 수 있다.
3. 도덕적 의도는 한 기업내 직원의 동기부여와 행동에 매우 중요한 인간의 역동성을 보여준다.
4. 특히 CEO를 위한 강하고 지속되는 의사소통의 메시지.
5. 전략적 돌파구(strategic breakthrough)를 달성하기 위한 강력한 기초.

도덕적 의도의 한계. 단점

• Mourkogiannis가 기술한 4가지 외에 다른 도덕적인 아이디어가 많이 있다. 이러한 것들로는 평등, 보편적 정의 종교적 도덕성, 권위와 조상에 대한 순종, 애국심 등이 있다.
• 그러나 이러한 아이디어들은 그 자체만으로 대부분의 경쟁환경에 있는 기업에게 도덕적 의도로서 유용한 개념이 되어 직원들에게 영감을 불어넣어 주지는 않는다.

도덕적 의도 이론의 가정. 조건

• 효과적인 기업 전략은 어떤 도덕적 의도가 기업의 전략적 의도에 가장 밀접한 가를 확인하는 것으로 시작한다.
• 진정한 비즈니스 리더의 중요한 역할은 그와 그의 동료들에게 영향을 미치는 도덕적 주류(moral currents)를 알고 행동하는 것이다.
• 만일 한 기업의 목적인 X이면 그 기업의 전략은 Y여서는 안된다. 그것은 효과가 없을 것이며 오히려 해가 될 수 있다.
