Current Reality Tree

A useful tool that Goldratt uses to identify bottlenecks is the Current Reality Tree (CRT).
Similar to a Root Cause Analysis, a current reality tree is a statement of an underlying core problem and the symptoms that arise from it.
It maps out a sequence of cause and effect from the core problem to the symptoms.
Most of the symptoms will arise from the one core problem or a core conflict. Remove the core problem and we may well be able to remove each of the symptoms as well. Operationally we work backwards from the apparent undesirable effects or symptoms to uncover or discover the underlying core cause.

Current reality tree

In practice, it helps to combine RCA with current reality. We can start with RCA by focusing on the symptoms and drilling down to the core problem using techniques like 5 whys. From any level of the drill down, we can look at other effects of the identified cause. If they are important, we include them in our current focus. This back & forth movement between cause & effect along with branching out helps a lot to get better picture of the problem domain.

Current Reality Tree of TOC

A better way is opened to get to the core problem in the current reality tree. However, it is rather difficult and requires practicing to complete the job quicker than it can be done through the conventional CRT process.

Example of CRT: Conflict

Goldratt shared the current reality tree of conflict, a common stumbling block in most businesses. At least one party is unhappy with the status quo. In some cases, either or both might refuse to listen, and are on the verge of quitting. They see each other as irrational, unreasonable, disagreeable. Every act, decision, word, or gesture is misinterpreted. Resentment arises. Both sides jump to conclusions, misinterpretations, memo haven, undue retaliation, stalemate, communication breakdown, managers cry insubordination. Workers feels oppressed.. Divorce, or war! Such is the environment that rejects the best people and ideas.
Goldratt says the core problem in most important conflicts is a currently practiced win-lose arrangement, or the perception of it. One or both parties aren't happy.
The solution therefore is win-win. From this Goldratt invented the evaporating cloud technique for generating win-win resolutions even in complex conflicts. Win-win or no deal is the best policy 24/7 and all year round.

Book: Logical Thinking Processes - Bill Dettmer

Hello everyone; I guess the thinking processes I read about in the TOC handbook and in Goldratt's business novels are nice and motivated me to read more about them.
Eli Goldratt was a very intelligent man from all that I've read about him. The only problem is that not everyone is as intelligent as he was, and especially not me.
So I never managed to create my own current reality trees, even though I was very motivated, because I lacked a step by step book or lesson.
I found this step-by-step book by William Dettmer and here is a link of that book in amazon.
I also went to a 5,5 days workshop in Luxembourg to be taught how to use the logical thinking process and it has been a brilliant way to experiment what I had been reading.
Good luck to all of you, Erik.
