What is the Strategy Change Cycle?

The Strategy Change Cycle by John M. Bryson ('95) is a description of a cyclical strategic change process in 10 steps. It should be seen as typically very fluid, iterative, and dynamic in practice, but it nonetheless allows for a reasonably orderly, participative, and effective approach to determining how to achieve what is best for an organization. Bryson  does not prescribe a one-size-fits-all mechanistic approach but stresses instead the importance of customizing strategies to fit the Culture of the organization, the values of the people involved, the complexity of the issues being addressed, the needs of stakeholders and customers, the resources available, and a wide variety of other factors.

The standard 10 phases of Bryson are:

1. Initial Agreement (Plan for Planning).

2. Mandates.

3. Mission / Values (By Stakeholders).

4. Environment (SWOT Analysis).

   • External

   • Internal.

5. Strategic Issues.

6. Strategy Formulation.

7. Strategy and Plan Review and Adoption.

8. Description of Organization in the Future (Vision for Success).

9. Develop Implementation Process.

10. Strategy and Planning Process Reassessment.
