Edward de Bono의 6색깔 모자 기법은복잡한 상황이나 도전에 대한 서로 다른 관점을 탐구하는데 이용될 수 있는 모델이다. 상황을 다양한 방법으로 보는 것은 전략수립이나 복잡한 의사결정 프로세스에서 좋은 아이디어가 되기도 한다.
STH 기법은 가장 자연스럽게 추정할 수 있는 것과 매우 다를 수 있는 어느 한 주제에 대한 다양한 관점을 의도적으로 탐색할 수 있게 해주도록 설계되었다. 특정한 사고를 취함으로써 또는 마치 그들 자신이 특정관점을 취함으로써 사람들은 역할을 한다. 예를 들면 어느 한 사람이 단지 토론을 활성화하기 위해서 악역(devil's advocate)을 담당할 수 있다. 악역의 목적은 의도적으로 아이디어를 창출하기 위한 것이다. 즉 비판적으로 무엇이 잘못되었는지를 찾아보는 것이다.
각각의 모자는 특정한 모자를 착용했을 때 사람이 취하는 관점을 묘사해주는 하나의 색깔로 이름을 붙인다. 예를 들면 악역 담당자는 검정색 모자를 착용했을 때 연관된 역할이다.
6가지 모자
백색 (관찰자) 백지; 중립적; 활용가능한 정보, 객관적인 사실, 필요한 것, 획득방법에 초점을 둠.
빨간 (각자, 다른 사람) 불, 온정; 정서, 감정, 직관, 육감; 설명이나 정당화없이 관점 제시.
검정 (각자, 다른 사람) 검정색 예복을 착용한 단호한 재판관; 도덕적 판단; 비판적 ; 왜 틀린지; 논리적 부정적 견해.
노란색(각자,다른 사람)햇빛; 낙천주의; 논리적인 긍적적인 견해; 무엇이 좋은지, 좋은 것을 찾음.
녹색 (각자, 다른 사람) 식물; 창조적인 생각; 가능성과 가설; 새로운 아이디어
파란 (관찰자) 하늘; 냉정함; 개관적; 프로세스, 단계, 다른 색깔의 모자에 대한 통제; 의장, 조직자; 사고에 관한 사고
De Bono 모자는 정서적인 상태뿐만 아니라 (이슈를 바라보는 관점같은) 마인드의 틀을 나타낸다 De Bono는 "정서는 우리의 사고능력의 필수불가결한 부분으로서 우리의 사고를 배양시켜주는 특별한 것이 아니다(1925, 27페이지)"라고 지적하였다. 한가지 사고 스타일(또는 모자)는 그 자체로서 다른 것보다 더 나은 것이 아니다. 완전하고 균형잡힌 팀은 그들이 직면한 이슈들의 모든 측면을 고려하기 위하여 모든 색깔의 모자의 필요성을 인식한다.
대부분의 그룹에서 개인은 특정한 관점(낙관적, 비관적, 객관적 등)을 지속적으로 채택하는 것에 속박감을 느끼는 경향이 있다. 이것은 각각의 개인 그리고 전체로서의 집단이 이슈를 탐색할 수 있는 방법과 정도를 제한한다. 6색깔 모자 기법으로 더 이상 한 가지 사고에 한 가지 관점에 제한되지 않게 된다. 모자는 사고행위의 범주이며 사람들 그 자체의 범주는 아니다. 모자의 목적은 사고를 안내하는 것이며 사고 또는 사고자를 분류하고자 하는 것이 아니다. 사실 각기 다른 모자를 착용함으로써 사람들은 다양한 새로운 사고를 생각할 수도 있다. 하나의 모자를 착용하는 것은 의도적으로 반드시 자신의 사고가 아닌 어느 한 관점을 채택하는 것을 의미한다. 모든 그룹 구성원들이 이러한 사실을 알고 있는 것이 중요하다. 그룹 구성원들은 진술을 할 때 자신들이 착용하고 있는 모자의 색깔을 분명히 확인해야 한다. 분명하게 확인된 모자를 착용하는 것은 행동과 자신을 분리하는 것이다. 6색깔 모자 기법은 그 자체로서 개인의 사고에도 유용한 방법이다.
